Following is an overseeding schedule for public courses located in Palm Springs, Cathedral City, Rancho Mirage, Palm Desert, Indian Wells, La Quinta and Indio, CA.

The Top 5 “Stay and Play” Desert Golf Resorts

The Top 5 List: Golf Resorts
by DesertCADDIE.com

La Quinta Resort

La Quinta Resort

The Top 5 Lists are based on the “unbiased” opinion of DesertCADDIE.com.  The Top 5 Golf Resorts are one of a series of Top 5 Lists that DesertCADDIE will be publishing. You may have your own favorites and if you can give an argument, maybe you can sway our thinking and get your favorite golf resort on the list. Just add your favorites or feedback at the end of this article using the comment tool or on Facebook.  We would love to hear your top picks.

#5 Eagle Falls and Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino

Great golf course, fun to play and great GPS systems in every cart.  Nice resort and casino with some great entertainment venues and excellent restaurants.  All the amenities needed for a great retreat.  Once you are there, you never have to leave.

#4  J.W. Marriotts Desert Springs Resort

Maybe one of the coolest resort properties in the desert.  Excellent restaurants, pools, hotel rooms and atmosphere.  The spa is second to none.  The golf courses are fun to play and nestled in a breathtaking setting.

#3 Indian Wells Golf Resort and Club

Perfect location along Hwy 111 in Indian Wells.  Close to all the action.  Two excellent Championship Golf Courses.  They have comfortable hotel rooms and views of the mountains. A huge clubhouse, good restaurants and relaxed atmosphere.

#2 Westin Mission Hills Resort

You’ve heard it before, but thanks to the Gary Player Course, this resort will stay up there on our list.  The Dye Course is nice too, but it doesn’t have the playable resort features that the Player has.  Westin Mission Hills is a resort property with  spectacular views.

#1 La Quinta Resort and PGA West

When they were separate, La Quinta Resort was an excellent property in itself.  The Mountain Course, which used to be private, was considered by many to be one of the best. Now that they have combined the resort courses of PGA West into their arsenal, you have to give them the nod as the all around “Best Resort.”

Two Valley Resorts in Golf Digest Top 75

Alcatraz #17 PGA West

Alcatraz #17 PGA West

Golf Digest puts out top lists for golf properties every year under different categories.  For 2009, two Coachella Valley Resorts made the list of top resorts.  La Quinta Resort and PGA West are now combined to create a mega-resort with five championship public golf courses.  The Dunes Course and Mountain Courses, located at the La Quinta Resort and Club.  The Nicklaus Resort, Greg Norman and Stadium Courses, located at PGA West.  La Quinta started the resort boom back in 1929 as a small hotel with a 9-hole golf course and now along with the addition of PGA West, houses more top rated courses than anywhere else in Southern California. La Quinta/PGA West is #56 out of the top 75.

  • La Quinta Resort Mountain Course, famous for its unique design and stunning visuals, this challenging layout is ranked among Golf Magazine’s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play”
  • La Quinta Resort Dunes Course, this Pete Dye-designed course provides a relaxing round of golf surrounded by dramatic landscapes
  • PGA WEST Stadium Golf® Course, ranked among Golf Magazine´s “Top 100 Courses You Can Play,” this Pete Dye jewel is described as a “must play” for all who seek the ultimate challenge.  The Stadium Course is also ranked #4 out of the top 50 toughest courses by Golf Digest.  Once played on the PGA Tour and dropped because the players considered it too tough
  • PGA WEST® Jack Nicklaus Tournament Course, this course combines dramatic backdrops with challenging design to leave a lasting impression on golfers of every level
  • PGA WEST® Greg Norman Course, spectacular desert terrain with limited turf gives players a unique and challenging experience

The next resort in the top 75 is not one that might be on everyone’s list, but it is on DesertCADDIE’s.  The Westin Mission Hills Resort has two Championship Golf Courses, the Gary Player and the Pete Dye.  Westin Mission Hills Resort is # 71 in the top 75.

  • Westin Mission Hills Pete Dye, this course is typical Pete Dye set up with the railroad ties and all. Beautiful 360 degree views of the mountains surrounding the Coachella Valley
  • Westin Mission Hills Gary Player, one of the best resort golf courses according to DesertCADDIE.com.  The Player is a challenging, yet fair golf course for all levels.  The #1 “must play” resort course in the desert.  A course that you could play every day and never get tired of it.
