Palm Desert, CA-The Desert Willow Golf Resort in Palm Desert is using some new strategies to attract golfers. Giving players Tee Prizes to go along with their green fees is a nice touch to bring extra value to customers and give them a little memento of playing the course. Discounted rates over the holiday weekend and restaurant vouchers included in the price of a round, are a great way to fill the golf course and bring players in throughout the day. It is nice to see that there is still some business going on out there instead of just the same old status quo.
So let’s do the math on this one. $55.00 Green Fee-includes tee prize, $15.00 lunch, a beer or margarita, a golf cart, range balls and you get to play at one of the finest public golf facilities in the Coachella Valley. Sounds like a no-brainer if you enjoy playing golf or would like to give Desert Willow a try.
Desert Willow has also introduced another interesting opportunity to try out their beautiful Firecliff and Mountain View golf courses. It’s called the Gridiron Challenge and incorporates golf with a little football. It is an “18 and Dine” of sorts. The $25.00 Green Fee-includes tee prize, golf cart, range balls, closest to the pin and long drive competitions for 18-holes. All players are then invited back to the clubhouse to watch the games and for more fun and raffle prizes. Sounds like a great way to get the girlfriend or wife to go watch football after you take her to play in a little fun afternoon of golf.
These are just a couple of ways that Desert Willow is bringing a bit of excitement back into the game of golf. I wish them all the success in their effort to bring some life back into the sport.
Pro-Am Review – Oak Valley Golf Club
1888 Golf Club Dr., Beaumont, CA 92223
By Tony Schieffer, PGA
Oak Valley Golf Club gives you all the test you need. From the tips, it plays just over 7000 yards. The majority of the greens are two and three tiered and any shot not properly placed will roll off the putting surface. The greens are receptive and fast. The surfaces are almost completely poanna, which makes a great putting surface, but creates many subtle breaks.
Many unique holes on this par 72 lay-out. The mountain views and lush vegetation surrounding the holes is truly an experience to remember. The front nine is good with the first two holes being shortish (under 400 yards) par 4′s that give you the feeling that you might be able to actually throw a low number on the board. The third hole is the first of several great par 3′s with a huge elevation drop to a green that is probably 90 feet long. I hit a shot about 5 feet right of the pin and it spun 20 feet right off the side of the green.
The back 9 creates a setting that makes you feel like you are on a totally different golf course. Thick foliage lining both sides of the fairway on all the par 4′s and one of the most beautiful par 5′s in #16 that you will find on any course. Play the tees that are right for you on Oak Valley. If you can’t hit it at least 250 off the tee, don’t play the blues because you won’t have a prayer of breaking 80.

The Oak Valley Golf Club is fun to course to play, with scenic views around all 18 holes. The snow-capped mountains in the backdrop make for some spectacular scenery as you play throughout the course. Oak Valley’s landscaping and course design creates an ambiance that makes you feel like you are in Northern California. There were many different types of trees lining the fairways, but I didn’t see one palm tree. It was a refreshing change to see fall colors with deciduous trees mixed in among the eucalyptus and pines.
While the scenery is beautiful, you will need to keep your focus on the greens. It takes a very strong short game to make it off of the course with your ego intact. I was able to get next to the green in two shots on many of the par 4′s, but once on the green I racked up the strokes. I think I was able to two putt on one hole . . . I won’t tell you how I putted on the rest of the holes. The greens are fast and designed with well-placed bunkers and unpredictable breaks.
Oak Valley has a pro shop, clubhouse with restaurant and bar. We didn’t have a chance to try out the restaurant, but it has a nice view of the practice range. The practice range is large and provides plenty of room for multiple players to warm-up before their games. On the way to the first tee you will pass a practice putting green, also with nice views of the mountains and clubhouse below.
The Oak Valley Golf Club will challenge your golf skills while providing you with many unforgettable holes. Not because they are so difficult, but because they are so beautiful. If you have the time, drive out to Oak Valley and play a round of golf. After golf you can stop by the outlet malls on your way home!
